UNCOUNTABLE NOUN

A.    Introduction
Uncountable nouns (or non-count or mass noun) are words which cannot be counted. Therefore, they only have a singular form. They have no plural forms. These words are thought of as wholes rather than as parts.

C.    Using Uncountable Nouns

When using uncountable nouns, pay attention to articles and adjectives! Some articles and adjectives can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns. However, others can be used with only countable or only uncountable nouns.

§    Much à She didn’t have much fun at the Tunjungan Plaza
§    Amount à They give us an amount of money
§    Littleà There is only a little milk on the table
§    LessàDoctors recommend eating less salt
§    A little bit àA little bit of confidence will destroy your dream

b.                  Uncountable and Countable
·       The à The knowledge are so important
·       Some à Some news are read by the announcer
·       Any à Do you have any homework?
·       Noà There is , no money in my wallet
·       a lot of à I need a lot of sugar for my noodle
·       lots of àI’ll buy lots of ice cream for you
·       enough àI haven’t enough time to accompany you this week
·       plenty of àIt will be sweet taste if you give plenty of sugar

Ø  Uncountable noun can be plural form when there is another word in the sentence
- There are new wines being introduced every day.
- The waters of the Atlantic are much warmer this time of year.

- The Dutch are famous for their cheeses.

Ø  Sometimes Uncountable noun need singular verb
- This news is very important.
- Your luggage looks heavy.



Ø  Indefinite article a, an are not usual in  uncountable nouns.
®    a piece of news (not a news)
®     a bottle of water (not a water)
®    a grain of rice (not a rice)

Ø  When want to use Indefinite article a, an there should an adverb first
®      There has been a lot of research into the causes of this disease
®      He gave me a great deal of advice before my interview
®       They've got a lot of furniture
®       Can you give me some information about uncountable nouns?

Ø  Uncountable nouns use with zero article
®      Poetry is beautiful
®      Sugar is sweet
®      Experience is the best teacher.
